How Common Causes Of Poor Time Management Can Cause You To Fail

Here in this article are some common causes of poor time management that can cause you to fail. These causes of poor time management can make or break your business as well as your personal life.

Time management is crucial for every person personal life and business regardless of its size or if the business is online or offline.

However, if you are anything like me (a chronic procrastinator) this is not usually easy for most people and they end up failing in their personal endeavors and business ventures.

There are different ways on how having poor time management can cause you to fail and knowing them in advance can help you save your time and  business from ending prematurely.

What is Time Management?

Time management is the process of planning and exercising conscious control of time spent on specific activities, especially to increase effectiveness, efficiency or productivity.

What Does Poor Time Management Mean?

Poor time management can be related to procrastination as well as problems with self-control.

Why Poor Time Management Skills Are Bad For Your Business

Time is always important for every business. There are many things that you need to do everyday and without proper management, you may not be able to accomplish everything you want.

Poor time management is one of the reasons why so many people have to close their businesses. You need to know when not to waste your time doing unprofitable activities and instead spend more time on your business.

Well managed time gives you positive results and you will not get stressed over poor performance of a business if your time is managed well. Read on to see a number of mistakes that most people make in time management.

Common Causes of Poor Time Management

Having Too Much To Do

Learning to say no is good for your business because it ensures you are able to focus on your work comfortably and provide quality work. You should also allow others to assist you and stop believing that you are the only one who can do the job perfectly.  This will help you manage your time effectively, by doing only what you can manage within a certain period of time.

You Get Too Tired To Do Everything

As business management comes with many tasks and sometimes you may not know where to begin especially if everything is needed at the same time.  You have to do what you can within the time you have.

When we are tired, we will avoid big projects that can potentially be profitable. Instead take a nap if you need too and choose the simple projects  to work on so   you won’t lose golden chances to making good money.

Fatigue

A day becomes shorter if you fail to plan your time properly. Have you ever felt like a day is shorter than others because you still have a lot to do? That is one thing that comes with poor time management.

It is terrible and gives you stress especially if the job cannot be done at night. It makes your body and mind completely fatigued and you end up having restless nights.

This is not good for your business and it means the following day, you will be working with a foggy mind.

Procrastination

Putting off your tasks makes you delay your business progress. You need to know what you should be focused on right now. When you procrastinate, guilt of failing to begin the task turns into fear and you fail to finish the work on time and sometimes even finishing at all.

Not Having a To-Do List

Sometimes we have too many tasks to perform and if we do not write them down, we will end up forgetting some of them.  Always note down every request or job that needs to be prioritized. You can use a coding system that you can understand easily.

If the list is long and full of too many important projects, you should delegate some of the tasks to another person and make sure that every person is served at the right time.

Poor Concentration

With little time and a lot of work to be done, you will lose proper concentration. Your mind will be wandering thinking about this and that. It results to poor quality work and more time will be wasted repeating the task or quarreling with clients. In some people, it causes what is known as scattered approach which involves doing little here and there.

Unpreparedness

Working without any preparation is the same as preparing to fail. This is caused by poor time management and you find yourself in a meeting without all the required information. A poor presentation makes your efforts ineffective because you failed to plan your time properly and carry out a good research in advance.

Failing To Set Achievable Personal Goals

As an investor you need to know where you want to be in one year or even six months from now. Set both short and long term goals and you will manage your time effectively. Goals make you work harder and stay away from any distractions.

Not Knowing What Prioritize

Knowing what to prioritize is difficult especially if you have many things to do at the same time. Delegate some duties and stick to your business plan because losing a chance to work on a brilliant idea that can make you thrive can be a mistake. Some matters are often a waste of time and do not result in anything positive.

Not Managing Distractions Effectively

There are people who lose more than two hours every day due to distractions. At the end of the month they will lose more than 50 hours which if used properly can increase their business. Avoid unnecessary chats, phone calls and social network messages that interrupt with your work.

Simply put time management is something that should be constantly developed throughout life. As systems change and the world is changing so should the way you manage your time.

Meaning… There are new ways of doing things. It’s about being more efficient in your most valuable assets which is time. This is and should be a constant learning process in our lives and businesses.

  1. Hallo there Jamie,

I have to say that reading your post felt like to sitting through a counseling session with the counselor reading your mind.

    Thanks a lot.

I will surely come back for more.

I enjoyed the video very much. I have often fallen into the trap of not managing my time well. The best tip I have used successfully is a to do list. Whenever I impliment a to do list I get alot more done. Thank you for your tips and research into an area that affects us all on occassion.

    1. Jamie Clay says:

Hi Cathy! You are welcome for the tips and glad I could help!

  3. Glen Oosthuizen says:

Great post, I myself have just gone through a phase where time management was a key are of focus for me and its amazing what you can fit into a structured day, great content and something that is easily overlooked while we try to cram so much into 24 hours in a day, I enjoyed the read thank you!

    1. Jamie Clay says:

Hey Glen!  THank you for taking the time to read the content. Im glad it was helpful to you.

  4. Hey Jamie,

I heard a story by Bob Proctor the other day that really got me thinking the same way you tell us how to manage time in your article.

Bob was talking about when he used to frequent his mentor Earl Nightingale.  Every time he would know that there was a meeting with him coming up with him, he would fill his pockets with little pieces of paper with questions to ask him.

On one of those breakfast meetings, he had came prepared as usual, and asked Earl how he had been able to master time management.  Earl looked at him and smiled and then said “I didn’t master time management, nobody can master time!  I manage events and things to do.  Every night before going to bed, I make a list of things to do, and the next morning, I do them.

It’s that simple, just like you say in your article, we have to prioritize tasks, and even if we fall off sometime, we really only have to get up and go at it again!

Thanks for this very informative article!

  5. Time management is very important. If you are not careful the day will go by and you  haven’t accomplished anything. This article is much needed. People have to understand that if they want to run a successful business then they must have a schedule. They must plan ahead. It is too easy to get sidetracked and distracted by anything that may come up.

Personally, I could do better with creating a to-do list and sticking to it. As a stay-at-home mom to 4 kids, it gets crazy!

    Thanks again.

    1. Jamie Clay says:

      Hi Kye!

Sticking to a to do list has been a great toll for me! I say stick to what works best for you! THanks for commenting.
